The Tonium Pacemaker (see CNET Review or the official page) is kinda geared toward DJs, but if you’re an average everyday music fan, you’re gonna love the 60GB of storage. That’s right – 60 Gigabytes. That’s a lot more than my first ten computers had put together. (Hope that doesn’t hint at how old I am!) In any case, this is a second generation offering from Pacemaker and it shows.
There are some things that you can complain about, but you have to remember that the Tonium Pacemaker is somewhere between a ‘normal’ consumer MP3 player and a high-end piece of DJ equipment. The interface is a little complicated and it doesn’t have some features that expensive DJ equipment has, but it’s not expensive and you get what you pay for when it comes to MP3 players, you know.
While you shouldn’t expect too much out of it, the MP3 player does deliver on a lot of fronts. Priced under $500, this second generation has a smaller harddrive, but when you think about it, 60GB should be more than enough music for any party. I mean, unless the larty lasts a couple years or something and you don’t want to ever repeat a song. Seriously, though 60GB is going to be more than enough music for any party – or even a series of parties.
Here’s the deal with the interface. They’ve tried to fit so many features into an 8 button set-up that each button has to have multi-purposes. It’s almost like remembering the moves to punch into a controller for a video game, but it’s okay once you get accustomed to it. You’re going to want to read the instructions, though.
