Music To Your Ears: iPod Classic

overview_hero20090909There’s a reason that I (and many others) still use iPod as an all-encompassing term for mp3 player – at the end of the day, the iPods are by far the best on the market. With the release of the Apple iPod Classic Third Generation, this trend only continues, offering a familiar and sleek design, an easy to use interface, and plenty of other features to make you forget about the competition.

A first glance at the third generation wouldn’t tell you anything significant had changed – the design is exactly the same as previous models. It’s sleek and uncomplicated, so I see that as a plus. The really interesting additions are in the details, like the new split screen menu that simultaneously features your selection and a picture from it. The Genius playlist feature is a fun and entertaining option that helps remind you of what, exactly, you have on your iPod.

A whopping 160 GB of memory allows you to have a huge library of songs at your disposal, as well as storing several videos. Video playback is easy, convenient, and not at all a strain on the eyes. What’s more, with a battery life of 36 hours for audio and 6 for video, you can get the most out of all that information. If you’re desperate, the classic can even serve as a USB hard drive.

There are no shiny bells and whistles on the Classic, which is both good and bad. While it doesn’t offer that feeling of playing everything and doing your laundry too, the services it does offer are solid and above reproach. Sound quality is dependably good, video playback is even better, and the storage capacity can’t be beat. So while it’s not fancy or ultra high-tech, the iPod Classic is still your best (and in some cases only) option for high capacity mp3 players. Will you be upgrading? Leave a comment and let us know.
